Dental emergencies in kids can happen anytime anywhere. Your child might encounter knocked out tooth, toothaches, bitten lips, broken jaw, broken braces, etc at home or while playing sports. Are you ready to respond when your child holds his hands up to his mouth and starts crying?

Much like other medical emergencies, these dental occurrences needs your calm mind and prompt action. Corona dentists for kids share first aid care tips to help you prevent the problem from getting out of hand.

For toothaches
Is your child complaining about a toothache? Clean the affected tooth first. Avoid placing aspirin. With a saline mix composed of warm water and salt, rinse the mouth. In case of swelling, use cold compress. To help relieve the pain, give acetaminophen to your child. Go to the dentist at once.

For bitten lip, tongue or cheek
There are times when your child accidentally bites his tongue, lips, or cheek. In this case, bleeding occurs. To stop the bleeding, use a cloth or gauze and apply firm pressure on the area. Check if the bleeding continues. For emergency treatment, proceed to the hospital immediately.

For knocked out teeth
First aid for knocked out baby tooth is easier. Place a cloth or gauze on the area and ask your child to apply pressure for about 15 minutes. Tell him or her to repeat previous steps if bleeding continue. If the bleeding persists, proceed to a dentist.

For knocked out permanent tooth, here are a few steps you need to undertake. Find the tooth and rinse it. When handling, keep in mind not to damage any tissue. Try to insert the tooth where it was removed and ask your child to hold it in place by biting. Use a piece of cloth or gauze if it helps. Otherwise, put the tooth in a cup of milk and see your dentist immediately.

For broken teeth
Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water immediately. On the injured area, place a cold compress. Find the broken fragments of the tooth if you can. Store it in a sterile container. Go to the dentist at once.

For broken jaw
Secure your child’s jaw before proceeding to the hospital. Use handkerchief, towel or tie to prevent the jaw from moving.

For broken braces
Take off components that you can easily remove. Create a barrier between the protruding material and the cheeks and/or lips using gum, dental wax or balls of cotton. Do not attempt to remove the wire of the braces if it is stuck in any area of the mouth.
